School mascots continue to change for being too offensive

(KUSI) – Mascots at some colleges and universities are coming under fire for the perception that they are offensive or insensitive in some way.

Native American mascots are primarily targeted but even “Colonial” the George Washington University mascot has fallen under scrutiny for it’s “deep connection to colonization”.

Last year Cal State Long Beach got rid of their mascot called “Prospector Pete” because they said he represented the gold rush which was, “a time in history when the indigenous peoples of California endured subjugation, violence and threats of genocide.”

San Diego State University decided in May of 2018 to keep the Aztec moniker but adjust it to make it more culturally sensitive and call it a Spirit Leader, not the mascot..
