SDPD investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Southcrest

SOUTHCREST (KUSI) — One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting in the area of South 40th Street and Boston Avenue in Southcrest Wednesday, according to San Diego police.

The law enforcement shooting took place shortly before 5:30 p.m., as patrol personnel were investigating a report of a machete assault that left a person injured in the inner-city neighborhood between Interstate 805 and state Route 15, according to San Diego police.

Patrol Officers from Southeastern Division responded to the area and found a 57[year-old male victim who had sustained injuries consistent with an edged weapon attack. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

While investigating the incident, an officer attempted to contact a possible suspect around the corner from the initial scene. The suspect was uncooperative and refused to follow the directions of the officer.

The contact escalated to the point where a Taser was deployed – but was not effective – and a San Diego Police Officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect at least once.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 7:45 p.m.

No police personnel were injured in the encounter with the suspect, Tansey said. It was unclear how many officers fired their weapons during the confrontation.

The suspect has been identified in this case, but his name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Police shut down traffic lanes in the area as investigators gathered evidence.
