SeaWorld refuses comment on PETA orca artificial insemination ‘sex scandal’ claims
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is handing out information at Balboa Park that shares information on how whale semen is obtained at the park for artificial insemination. The leaflet urges people to boycott attending the park. SeaWorld San Diego refused comment on the claims Friday.
"As with any of these materials, we have no desire to comment," SeaWorld San Diego spokesman David Koontz said.
"Tourists in Balboa Park have been a bit surprised to receive copies of the enclosed leaflet, which highlights the sex scandal that SeaWorld would rather not have in the open,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. The flyer includes an illustration of a man riding an inflatable whale with the caption: "SeaWorld: where grown men perform sex acts on orcas."
PETA claims that SeaWorld trainers "masturbate" male orcas, and that females that resist insemination are removed from the water and rendered helpless. The organization also tried to purchase billboards to spread their message but advertising companies turned PETA away.
