Second Marine killed in Oahu helicopter crash identified

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A second Marine who was injured when a Camp Pendleton-based helicopter crashed in Hawaii and died from his injuries was identified Thursday as 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Matthew J. Determan.

The Maricopa, Arizona resident, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, “represents the best America has to offer,” according to 15th MEU Commanding Officer Col. Vance Cryer.

The MV-22 Osprey assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, was conducting routine training drills when it made a hard landing in Oahu over the weekend.

Over 20 Marines onboard the helicopter were injured in the crash, and one of them, 24-year-old Lance Cpl. Joshua E. Barron, was killed. The unit was recently dispatched on a seven-month deployment.

Two Marines are still in the hospital and are in stable condition.
