Second Miramar Marine dies of unknown causes in less than a week

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A Marine based at USMC Air Station Miramar was stricken by an undetermined illness at the military station this week and died en route to a hospital, authorities announced Friday.

The Marine, whose identity was withheld pending family notification, was found unconscious in an undisclosed location at the base on Thursday and was pronounced dead while being transported to a trauma center, according to Marine Corps officials.

Last Saturday, another Miramar-based Marine died of unknown causes.

Cpl. Jerome Ventura, 23, of Holtsville, N.Y., also was discovered unconscious at the northern San Diego military station. He was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Both deaths remain under investigation, according to Marine Corps officials.
