Second shark sighting off Mission Beach

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A stretch of water off Mission Beach was closed again after an experienced surfer spotted a 14-inch dorsal fin in the water Friday, San Diego lifeguards said.

The fin was spotted about 8 a.m. about 100 yards from tower 13, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. The waters were closed in one mile in each direction from the location of the sighting.

The same area was closed Thursday afternoon after lifeguard spotted an 18-inch dorsal fin, but was later reopened to beachgoers, Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said. A fin that size could belong to a shark that is at least 10 feet long, he said.

It is very rare to have two credible people report different sightings in the same area, Lerma said.

Lerma said the affected area will reopen tomorrow.
