Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano resigns
U.S. Officials say Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano who handled issues from immigration to counter-terrorism announced Friday she is resigning to take a new position as president of the University of California system.
Napolitano said she will leave the Department of Homeland Security in September.
Napolitano, 55, will be the first woman to head the U-C system in its 145-year history, and confirmed as the nations first woman to hold the post the day after President Barack Obama took office in 2009.
“I want to thank Secretary Napolitano for her outstanding work on behalf of the American people over the last four years, said the president.
