Serra Conquistadors 55, Southwest Raiders (SD) 20

When the Serra Conquistadors have their mind set on conquering they sure do it well. The Serra Conquistadors continue their undefeated streak as they took the win over Southwest 55-20.

1st quarter the game was a battle for survival. Serra’s Benjamyn Coronado made an interception catch which he ran to all the way for a touchdown. Myles Bryant, giving the Conquistadors a 13-0 lead, completed the second touchdown of the night. The Raiders (SD) did not give up without a fight. They responded with a beautiful kick off return that would put them on Serra’s 30-yard line. Daniel Belton, the author of the kick off return run, would score putting them back in the game at 20-6 Serra. By the 2nd quarter, Serra Quarterback Timmy Zebroski ran the ball for a touchdown surprising everyone on a broken play. By half time Serra lead the game 42-12.

By the 3rd quarter the score was 49-12 Serra. Joshua Sanchez brought the Raiders (SD) back into the game by scoring a touch down that was accompanied by a 2-point conversion by Joe Young, 49-20 Serra. In the 4th quarter Southwest’s Joe Young and Joshua Sanchez had several defensive plays preventing the Conquistadors form scoring. However, it was nor enough to stop Serra’s Miles Bryant from scoring. He was able to sneak in one more touchdown (his fourth in the game) before the end of the night. The final score 55-20 Conquistadors. 

PREVIEW: This Friday the Serra Conquistadors march on over to the South Bay to face the Southwest Raiders (SD) at 7pm. The Conquistadors look to stay undefeated and conquer their way into a 2-0 record. The Raiders will defend their home turf as they seek their first win of the season.

Going into their second game of the season Serra wants to keep their winning streak going. Last week’s game started off a little rough for the Conquistadors as they tracked behind the El Cajon Valley Braves 16-6 in the first half. No obstacle would stop them from getting their first win of the 2017 season. With the help of Sophomore Quarterback Timmy Zebroski, scoring three out of the four touchdowns of the night, Serra made the comeback to take the win 40-16. Regardless of what side of the scoreboard Serra is on expect a showdown.

Southwest sets to recover and learn from small mistakes that cost them two games this season. With 7 fumbles in the last 2 matches, it is vital for the Raiders (SD) to prevent those errors from happening again. Players that will assist with their potential first win of the season are Senior Leonard Hoar, Junior Daniel Belton, and Sophomore Jovan Young. Jovan Young lead the team with 93 rushing yards last game, his speed and ability to gain yardage will be essential for Friday’s matchup.

Southwest Coach and Alumni Paco Silva shared that it will be the Raiders (SD) first time facing Serra in almost 15 years. In preparation for the game he tells the to team to keep their head up, stay committed, and that quitting is not an option. The showdown will be one for the books!
