Serra Sophomore Attempts to Qualify for Kia Classic

Imagine the scene – you’re a high school sophomore, attempting to qualify for the annual LPGA Kia Classic at Aviara Golf Club.  What could possibly make a memorable day all the more special?

Having your father be your caddy.

That was how Serra High School’s April Ranches spent her Monday, as the 15 year old attempted to become the only amateur to make the field in this year’s event.  The day would end, however, without Ranches claiming one of the two spots in the field.

“It was OK,” Ranches said.  “I was just like, ‘OK, even if I don’t make it today…it’s fine.’  I’m having fun, that’s all that really mattered today.”

“It was like any old tournament,” her father Robert said.  “We’re just having fun.  She played well; she did her best.”

If one thing is certain, it’s that April has several more years of golf ahead of her, as she has already committed to play her collegiate golf at nearby San Diego State.

“This is really what I want to do when I get older,” Ranches said.  “I’m almost there.  There’s just a little bit I need to work on and refine, and then I’d be good enough to do this for the rest of my life.”
