Seven San Diego beaches made the honor roll in annual water quality report

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Seven beaches in San Diego County made the honor roll in an annual report on coastal water quality that was released this week.

According to Health the Bay, an environmental organization that puts out a beach report card each year, four areas in Carlsbad had excellent year-round water quality – near the Encina Creek outlet and at the end of Cerezo Drive, Poinsettia Lane and Ponto Drive.

Also on the group’s honor roll were Windansea Beach at Playa del Norte in La Jolla, Saint Malo Beach in Oceanside and Point Loma at the lighthouse.

The study by Health the Bay, which covers the period from April 2013 to March of this year, found wide variances between conditions of dry and wet weather in some spots.

Almost all of the San Diego County beaches received A or A-plus grades for water quality in dry conditions, with the exception being a restroom near Leisure Lagoon on Mission Bay, which was given a B.

Three grades of F were recorded during stormy weather. Those include Buccaneer Beach at Loma Alta Creek and the foot of Forster Street in Oceanside; and the mouth of the Tijuana River near the border with Mexico.

Also near the border, the foot of Monument Road received a D.

However, beaches in Encinitas, Solana Beach, La Jolla and part of Ocean Beach maintained A-plus grades during rain events – along with those that made the honor roll, according to the report.

None of the 10 worst beaches in California identified by Heal the Bay were in San Diego County.

The organization found that coastal water quality has improved overall, including during wet weather.
