Several injured after large tree falls at MCRD
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Fifteen people were injured Thursday when a tree toppled
over in a courtyard at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, authorities said.
The approximately 12-foot-tall eucalyptus fell to the ground for unknown
reasons about 9 a.m. at the military installation next to Lindbergh Field,
according to base officials and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
At least some of the victims, most of whom suffered minor injuries, were
civilians in the area to watch Marine Corps cadets jog by while taking part
in a pre-graduation “motivational run,” MCRD spokeswoman Janice Hagar said.
Federal medics tended to 13 of the injured at the scene. A city
ambulance crew took the other two to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of
moderately serious injuries.
