Sewage-contaminated water shuts down South County beaches

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Sewage-contaminated water from the Tijuana River pushed toward the South County beaches by recent rainfall prompted authorities Friday to close a stretch of ocean shoreline near the U.S.-Mexico border to water contact.

The county Department of Environmental Health advised beachgoers to avoid the water from the international border north through the south end of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach, including at the Border Field Park and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge.

Signs advising of the contamination at Border Field Park and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge are to remain in place until test results indicate the water is safe for recreational use, according to the Department of Environmental Health.
