Sheriff’s deputy hospitalized after patrol car collides with trolley in Santee

SANTEE (KUSI) —  A San Diego County sheriff’s sergeant suffered minor injuries when his patrol SUV collided with a trolley in Santee, and sheriff’s officials Thursday were seeking witnesses to the crash.

The sergeant, whose identity was not released, was driving the Ford patrol SUV just before 6:30 p.m. on Buena Vista Avenue approaching Cuyamaca Street just north of the state Route 52 underpass, Cpl. William Price said.

"The sergeant entered the intersection traveling westbound on Buena Vista Avenue when he was broadsided by the trolley," Price said. "The trolley had been traveling southbound."

Footage from the scene showed the rear passenger side of the SUV crumpled, with no damage apparent on the trolley.

The sergeant, who works in the Santee substation, suffered minor injuries, Price said. No injuries were reported among trolley passengers. A Metro Transit System spokesman said the crash delayed the Green Line trolley service for about half an hour.

"The cause of the collision has not yet been confirmed," Price said, and the Santee substation’s traffic division is investigating. Anyone who witnessed the collision was asked to contact deputy Fabian Mauberis at (619) 956-4043.
