Social Security information of more than 130K sailors compromised

The Social Security numbers of thousands of current and former Navy sailors was accessed by unknown individuals in a security breach, United States Navy officials announced Wednesday.

The names and Social Security numbers of 134,386 Navy sailors as well as other sensitive information  was contained on a laptop reported as compromised, according to a statement released by Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs. The laptop belonged to a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPES) employee who worked on a Navy contract. It was unclear how the unknown individuals accessed the information but Navy officials said there was no evidence of misuse.

"The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously- this is a matter of trust for our Sailors," said Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke. "We are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach."

Navy officials said they will work to notify individuals affected by the breach over the coming weeks. The investigation is ongoing.
