South Bay Game of the Week: Mar Vista 42, San Ysidro 14
The Week 8 South Bay Game of the Week featured Mar Vista hosting San Ysidro. The Mariners don’t throw the ball that often, relying instead on their ground game, which they do on this night, winning 42-14.
Sophomore standout Khalil Spruill scores a nice running touchdown on the the third play of the game to put the Mariners on the board. Sophomore Cougar running back Corey Maddox responds in kind to tie it up.
By the end of the half it’s 35-7 Mar Vista featuring passing reception touchdowns to Nijal Collins and Alejandro Sosa…both thrown by Benjamin Munoz.
In the second half the Mariners get it done on defense with interceptions by Xaavier Williams (he would run it in for a touchdown on the very next play) and by Jacob Hinojosa.
Although San Ysidro comes up short, the fact is this is a football program with a bright future…there are many sophomores with years to play…quarterback Franklin Forbes is only a freshman! Said Head Coach Brandon Hawkins, “I had to get a permission slip from his parents that he play quarterback for us as a freshman.”
Mar Vista is now 5-2.
