Southwestern College releases statement following recent scandals

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – From the alleged harassment of a student to sexual relationships involving professors, Southwestern College is responding after facing scrutiny over back-to-back incidents.

It started when a video of Southwestern College police officers handcuffing and detaining a black male student — at one point taking him to the ground — after a suspected parking infraction fueled student concerns about police discrimination against people of color.

A few days later, an employee at Southwestern College filed a lawsuit against the school, alleging that one of her coworkers discriminated against her on the basis of her religion and sexual orientation and that the school ignored the issue for years.

And most recently, Southwestern College professor John Tolli resigned with a non-disclosure agreement after committing sex acts with students in his office. He now works at San Diego City College.

The college has issued a statement admitting that it has problems and insisting that they are dedicated to righting these wrongs.
