“Special Liberty Project” hosts Hiking into the Holidays event

MISSION TRAILS (KUSI) – The “Special Liberty Project is hosting an event next month that helps benefit military families and kids.

The Special Liberty Project is a nonprofit organization serving ill and injured Veterans and Gold Star Families, who are families who’ve lost a service member. They have an amazing program called the Gold Star Corps, the mission is to foster positive relationships between Gold Star Kids and Veteran mentors, by hosting fun and educational outdoor adventures.

The next mentoring event “Hiking into the Holidays”, will take place at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground on December 1st. The mentors will guide their Gold Star Kids around the lake on a scavenger hunt individualized for each pair.

On the hunt, they will gather all of the tools and materials required to build a wooden toolbox to take their tools home as a gift. The parents will also enjoy friendship and camaraderie together, creating ornaments while their children are spending the day with their mentors. This time of togetherness is even more powerful during the holiday season.

Founder and President of the “Special Liberty Project,” Jessica Merritt, told us all about it on Good Morning San Diego.
