Speeding motorist causes deadly collision in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD (CNS) – An investigation was under way Tuesday in Carlsbad, where a speeding motorist ran a red light and fatally struck another driver, police said.

The fatality at Rancho Santa Fe Road and Calle Barcelona occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Pete Pascual.

The driver of a Buick sedan ran a red light while speeding south on Rancho Santa Fe Road and collided with the driver of red Ford Mustang in the intersection of Calle Barcelona, Pascual said in a statement.

The driver of the Mustang died after witnesses to the crash tried unsuccessfully to save him, the lieutenant said, noting the driver of the Buick sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.
