Stair climbers honor 9/11 heroes
SAN DIEGO – On Sunday, San Diego firefighters sacrificed comfort to climb stairs in remembrance of the fallen heroes and victims of September 11, 2011.
More than a thousand people gathered downtown at the Hilton Bayfront Sunday morning.
Participants climbed the 30 story sky-rise three times to a total of 110 stories.
Many of the firefighters did it in their hot gear with heavy equipment to honor their brothers.
The event began at 8:45 a.m., the time the first World Trade Center tower was hit.
While it was an emotional day, they also celebrated life.
Proceeds from the event will go to Firefighter Aid, a local non-profit whose mission is to help support firefighters and their families during distress.
