Steele Canyon 34, Mt. Miguel 20
In our final week of regular season play, we headed out to Steele Canyon where the Cougars celebrated their 2014 Senior Night. The Cougars huddled up with their families before the game and received a pep talk from Coach Longerbone. The visiting Matadors put up an amazing fight but came up short as the Cougars took the win 34-20.
In the first quarter, we had scoring from both teams. Mount Miguel scored right away in their first drive, and Steele Canyon answered back with a touchdown in their next drive, after a 79 yard kick return by Derek Tyler. Steele Canyon would score again in the 1st with a 58-yard touchdown from Pierre Alexander. After a scoreless 2nd quarter, the score going into halftime was 13-7 Cougars.
Mount Miguel opened up the second half with an onside kick that would lead to their possession at the 50-yard line. The Matadors finished that drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Castillo to Christian Garcia. Steele Canyon answered back again, this time with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Dominick Wood-Anderson to Roosevelt Johnson. But, the Matadors weren’t done yet! Jacob Castillo found Christian Garcia again for a 23-yard touchdown, giving Mt. Miguel the lead 20-19. Steel Canyon would go on to score two more touchdowns, one 2-yard run from Malcolm Anders and a 60-yard touchdown by Pierre Alexander, the final score 34-20 Steele Canyon.
I want to personally thank the Matador team, as I was able to attend multiple games this season, and although they did not win a league game, they came out every week with all they had and left it all on the field. Their spirit and attitude made me proud to work for high school sports. Congratulations to Steele Canyon on the week 11 win, and good luck to both teams in playoffs!
