Suicide among first responders increasing

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A local San Diego police captain is sounding the warning about the stresses police, firefighters and other first responders face on the job. The stresses are exacting a terrible toll, and in many cases resulting in suicide.

Many first responders are becoming victims of the professions they have come love.

Captain Willis says the stress of police work, snuck-up on him early, when eh spent years as a sex crime detective. In a day’s work, he would have to look at hundreds of photos of young children being sexually abused.

In his new book, Willis outlines steps that need to be taken to save the souls of first responders, but just police and firefighters, but paramedics and emergency room personnel.
