Suicide bomber kills 29 people, detonates explosive in Iraq soccer stadium

BAGHDAD (KUSI) – A suicide bomber detonated an explosive in a soccer stadium south of Baghdad, Iraq, killing 29 people and wounding 60, a security official said. The bombing occurred in the city of Iskanderiyah. Medical officials confirmed the fatality count, though spoke on condition on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

No group has stepped forward to take responsibility for the bombing, though ISIS has been staging attacks around Baghdad in response to Iraqi forces pushing back against the militant group in the northern and western regions of Iraq. Iraqi troops and Sunni tribal fighters recently recaptured the town of Kubeisa, along with villages in Nineveh.

Iraqi ground forces are working toward a push on the largest city held by militants, Mosul. The caliphate has lost an estimated 40 percent of the territory it held in Iraq and 20 percent in Syria, which has led some officials to warn of an increase in insurgent-style attacks in response to the U.S.-led coalition’s progress.
