Surfer dies at Swami’s State Beach after suffering from heart attack
ENCINITAS (KUSI) – Another surfer died Monday at Swami’s State Beach after suffering from a heart attack.
The surfer was a 57-year-old Joy Froding, who resided in Cardiff by the Sea.
The Froding was at a local beach surfing when she began to have chest pain while seated on her board in the ocean. She told other surfers that she did not feel well and then became unresponsive.
Surfers got her to shore, called 9-1-1 and began bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitative efforts. Responding paramedics arrived and found the decedent pulseless and apneic.
Advanced cardiac life support measures were initiated and she was transported via ambulance to a local hospital emergency department. Upon arrival to the emergency department resuscitative efforts were continued.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:00 p.m.
A local surfer who witnessed the incident said Froding was a well-known surfer and was very respected.
"She loved everyone and was loved by all in the water. Always a smiling face; always encouraging to others; selfless in and out of the water," said Jonathan Sherr.
