Surfer rescued during Seau paddle out

OCEANSIDE (CNS) – A surfer was taken to a hospital in serious condition
after lifeguards pulled her from the water during a memorial paddle-out for ex-
Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, who committed suicide last week, authorities
said.

The surfer, a woman in her 50s, was face down in the water near Seau's
beachfront Oceanside home on South The Strand about 12:10 p.m. Sunday, said
Oceanside Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Kogerman.

Lifeguards brought the woman to the beach and began resuscitation
efforts. Firefighters then arrived and began treatment, Kogerman said, adding
the woman was then taken to a hospital in serious condition.

“I truly believe that the immediate response of the lifeguards and
treatment from the firefighters may have saved this person's life,” Kogerman
said.

Lifeguards previously called in extra staff for the paddle-out.
Lifeguards were in paddle boards, jet skis and a rescue boat and had increased
patrols on the beach, Kogerman said.
