Surfrider Foundation calls for permanent funding for national conservation program

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – An environmental group and several San Diego community leaders rallied Friday in an effort to highlight the need to pass legislation to protect an important federal land conservation program.

The Surfrider Foundation and local leaders gathered to show support for H.R. 3195 , a bill that would permanently. fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The Land and Water Conservation Program was established by Congress in the mid-60s.  It is meant to safeguard federal public lands and waters and includes all of the National lands and watersheds.

However, the program doesn’t have permanent funding and those gathered today say, over the years, billions of dollars earmarked for it, has been directed elsewhere. 49th District Congressman Mike Levin has co-sponsored a bill that would change that.
