Suspect in Ocean Beach homicide wounded in La Mesa police shooting

LA MESA (KUSI) – A fugitive wanted in connection with a day-old homicide in Ocean Beach was wounded this morning in a police shooting that erupted during a trespassing investigation in a neighborhood near Lake Murray, authorities reported.

Daniel Chase McKibben, 36, allegedly was armed with a knife and refusing to leave a home in the 7900 block of Rainey Street in La Mesa shortly before 9:30 a.m. when patrol officers contacted him.

During an ensuing confrontation, one of the officers opened fire on the suspect, wounding him in a hand and shoulder, La Mesa police Lt. Brian Stoney said. Medics took McKibben to a hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.

Investigators subsequently identified McKibben as a suspect in the slaying of a woman found dead at a home in the 5000 block of Niagara Avenue in western San Diego about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

McKibben’s brother was checking on the welfare of their mother, whom he had been unable to contact, when he saw his sibling running away from the residence. The concerned man then forced entry to a garage and discovered the body.

Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the slain woman.
