Wanted felon shot by police had pipe bombs

ESCONDIDO (CNS) – A busy Escondido intersection that leads to Interstate
15 was closed early Thursday as police investigated an officer-involved shooting
that claimed the life of a suspect and led law enforcement to several pipe
bombs.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday on Avenida Magoria near
Del Lago Boulevard, according to San Diego police. The body of man was visible
in the street near a red SUV with its windows blown out and driver's door
damaged.

Several San Diego police officers, including members of a gang unit,
were involved in pursing the man when the chase entered Escondido city limits.
The pursuit was due to warrants for the man's arrest, police said without
elaboration.

After suspicious devices were found inside the man's vehicle, a bomb
squad was called to the scene.

Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin described the devices as “some sort
of pipe bombs,” saying a few nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution
while the items were detonated.

No officers or residents were injured.
