Suspicious device detonated in Escondido

ESCONDIDO (CNS) – A bomb squad Thursday destroyed an object resembling a pipe bomb found next to a mailbox in a rural residential neighborhood near Jesmond Dene Park.

The discovery of the suspicious-looking cylinder was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of North Broadway in an unincorporated community just north of Escondido, sheriff's Sgt. Everard Dayrit said.

Deputies cordoned off the immediate area and called in an explosives- handling team. Unable to determine whether the tube was a home-made bomb, the team blew it apart with a water cannon as a precaution and collected the remnants for follow-up investigation, the sergeant said.
