1:08 p.m. – A SWAT team is searching a storage facility in Chula Vista for a suspect who allegedly shot two people. The area surrounding the 600 block of Anita was shut down as police seek out the man responsible for the early-morning shootings, according to the Chula Vista Police Department. The shootings occurred near a 24-hour Fitness gym in the area.
The shooting victims were shot in the lower extremities and the injuries they sustained are not considered to be life threatening. Both victims were transported to an area hospital, police said. The suspect is believed to have a relationship with the victims.
Capt. Lon Turner of the Chula Vista Police Department said the public is not in danger during a press conference. Surveillance showed the suspect entering the locked-down storage facility, though Turner added it does not guarantee the man is still on location.
Police responded to a call at 6:25 a.m. at the 24-Hour Fitness on Broadway and Palomar. The suspect was described as a 5’10, heavyset Latino man wearing dark clothing and armed with a handgun. Witnesses told officials that the gunman was last seen in a storage facility, which has since been contained by police and a SWAT team.
