Sweetwater Union High School District approves proposal that could lay off 182 teachers and 23 librarians

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The Sweetwater Union Board of Trustees held a board meeting Monday at Chula Vista Middle School and voted to move forward with a proposal that would cut up to 237 certificated employees, including teachers and librarians, and close 12 school learning centers.

Parents, teachers and students protested at the meeting against the proposed layoffs, which the district says is necessary to close a nearly $30 million budget deficit.

Nearly 100 people signed up to speak as the board opened up the meeting for public comment.

The board approved the layoffs, meaning hundreds of employees will soon receive notices that they are among those who might lose their jobs.

The notices will go out by no later than March 13, and the district has until May 15 to give final notice to those employees.
