Sweetwater Valley Little League wins 14-2 over Kentucky in first LLWS game

WILLIAMSPORT (KUSI) – 12:43 p.m. – Behind five third-inning home runs, including a Nick Maldonado grand slam, Sweetwater Valley Little League won their first game of the Little League World Series 14-2 over Bowling Green East of Kentucky.

The five home runs tied the LLWS record for most home runs in an inning.

Levi Mendez and Walker Lannom, the son of the team’s coach, each hit two-run home runs for Sweetwater, who will play Texas on Sunday.

12:21 p.m. – Sweetwater Valley’s Levi Mendez and Walker Lannom have each hit two-run home runs in the bottom of the third to extend the lead over Bowling Green East to 14-0 with two outs in the inning. The mercy rule will be in effect in the next inning.

12:15 p.m. – Sweetwater Valley’s Nick Maldonado hit a grand slam in the third inning to extend the league over Bowling Green East to 9-0 with two outs in the third. The mercy rule will be in effect if Sweetwater leads by 10 or more runs after the fourth inning.

11:59 a.m. – Sweetwater Valley now leads 5-0 in the third following two solo home runs in the bottom of the inning.

11:53 a.m. – Following a day-long rain delay that washed out all of Thursday’s action, the Little League World Series resumed Friday morning.

Sweetwater Valley Little League was scheduled to take on Bowling Green East from Kentucky in their first game in Williamsport. The team from California had 3-0 lead at the end of the second inning.
