Swimmers warned of big waves, strong currents

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A new long-period south swell will arrive in San Diego
County late Wednesday, bringing big waves and strong rip currents to the beaches
through Saturday night, meteorologists said.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement for San
Diego County effective from late tonight to Saturday night, saying 3- to 5-foot
waves with sets to 8 feet are expected north of Carlsbad and along south-facing
beaches between Point Loma and Imperial Beach. Elsewhere in the county, 2- to 4-
foot waves are expected.

“Swimmers are urged to use caution at all times and swim near a
lifeguard,” said an NWS advisory, which warned that strong rip currents are
likely.
