Ted Cruz gathers campaign support in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Monday — Ted Cruz held a rally Monday at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center in Mission Valley to gather campaign support before the California primary in June.

Cruz began his presidential campaigning in California with a rally in Irvine, insisting he is the only candidate who can defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in the general election.

Cruz, appearing in Irvine 57 days before the June 7 California primary, also told the cheering crowd at the Hotel Irvine that they will play a critical role in election.

"I’m going to say a sentence that has not been said in 50 years: California is gonna decide the Republican nomination for president,” Cruz said. "It is the men and women here, it is your friends, your family. I’m here today asking for every one of your help — that you not only stand with us but you pick up the phone and you call your friends, you call your family, you call your neighbors and say this election matters, it matters to me, it matters to my kids, it matters to my grandkids.”

KUSI’s Sasha Foo got a one-on-one interview with Cruz, asking where his latest surge of success has come from.

"We’re really seeing the Republican party uniting behind our campaign. In the last three weeks, we’ve one 11 elections all over the country," Cruz said.

The California Primary is June 7 and all the 2016 presidential candidates understand how important winning it will be.

Cruz made it clear he is confident that his campaign will take the California primary, over front-runner Donald Trump.

"Roughly 65 to 70 percent of Republicans recognize that nominating Donald Trump would be a mistake," he said.

So far, Cruz has won Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin.
