Teen becomes youngest to fly solo around world
A South Dakota teen has become the youngest person to fly solo around the world.
Nineteen-year-old Matt Guthmiller completed the more than 29,000 journey late Monday night, after touching down at Gillespie Field in El Cajon.
Guthmiller began the world-record flight on May 31 in a single-engine airplane. Guthmiller’s last leg took him from Honolulu, Hawaii to El Cajon on a 16-hour tour over the Pacific Ocean.
The Abeerdeen, South Dakota native was greeted by the media and his mother at the El Cajon airport. He says “it’s great to be back.”
Guthmiller graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen, South Dakota last year. He is now a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
