CHP investigating street racing crash on I-805

SAN DIEGO — A rollover crash on Interstate 805 late Sunday night is being blamed on street racing, according to authorities.

A group of young drivers were told by police to leave the area of 43rd Street near I-805 around 10:30 p.m.

The group started racing each other on the on-ramp to the southbound I-805.

Just north of Plaza Boulevard, one of the racers lost control of their car, skidded off the shoulder of the freeway, hit a light pole and a Call Box and overturned the vehicle.

The light pole then landed on top of the car.

According to witnesses, the driver of the vehicle was able to free himself from the wreckage and then jumped into another racer's vehicle and left the scene.

About 30 minutes later, the California Highway Patrol says the driver and his parents returned to the scene of the crash.

The driver was treated by paramedics.

The CHP is investigating the crash and said possible charges for racing and hit-and-run may be filed.
