Three San Diego Schools announce later start time for 2019-2020 school year

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Students at three San Diego Schools will soon be able to sleep in a little longer.

La Jolla High School & Muirlands Middle School will start at 8:35 AM next school year. Currently, La Jolla High School starts at 7:35 AM and Muirland Middle School begins at 7:30 AM.

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts will also implement a later start time, but has not decided what it will be yet.

The later start time is intended to improve sleep for the students although some parents believe it disrupts their work schedule.

Last year, the San Diego Unified School Board voted to have later start times by the year 2020.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports, La Jolla High Principal Chuck Podhorsky and Muirlands Middle Principal Geof Martin wrote in a letter, “Having a healthy start time has been shown to increase attendance, test scores and graduation rates, In addition, healthy start times lead to decreased rates of emotional and behavioral problems, including anxiety and depression, along with corresponding increases in social, academic and athletic performance.”
