Todd Gloria re-elected City Council president
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Todd Gloria was today unanimously reelected to a second one-year term as president of the San Diego City Council.
“He's thoughtful, respectful and has a really, really big heart,” Councilwoman Sherri Lightner said of Gloria, who represents downtown, Hillcrest and North Park and has also been serving as interim mayor since the Aug. 30 resignation of Bob Filner.
The council president runs the meetings of the panel and has authority over setting the agenda. Gloria has frequently turned the gavel over to Lightner this fall while he tends to mayoral duties.
Councilman Kevin Faulconer, one of the candidates hoping to finish Filner's term, called Gloria a “consummate professional” willing to work with everyone to find practical solutions to problems.
Faulconer's opponent, Councilman David Alvarez, said Gloria was performing so well that there was “really no other choice.”
Before the vote, Gloria said his colleagues were due the credit for his success.
“This council has banded together and put our city first,” Gloria said. “We've all worked collectively, not just advocating for your districts for which you're doing an excellent job, but on working on a citywide basis to make sure our finances are going well, that infrastructure is being taken care of and that we're moving the city forward.”
Gloria will continue with his dual role until either Faulconer or Alvarez is sworn in as mayor in the spring.
