Train fatally hits pedestrian

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a passenger
train at an Oceanside rail crossing, a sheriff's deputy said on Saturday.

Deputies were called to the Cassidy Street grade crossing shortly after
8 p.m. Friday after the pedestrian was struck by a northbound Coaster train,
sheriff's Deputy D. Morabe said.

Morabe said the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause
and manner of the pedestrian's death, according to Morabe.

The sheriff's office did not indicate why the pedestrian might have been
on the tracks at the crossing, which has gates and bells.
