Tri-City Christian Eagles 34, San Ysidro Cougars 14

Anthony Madden went supernova in the second half for #3 Tri-City Christian, as the Eagles advanced past the #6 San Ysidro Cougars in the Small School Game of the Week.

Both sides found points hard to come by in the early going, with San Ysidro getting on the board first late in the opening quarter when Daishawn Lee made a toe-dragging catch in the end zone on a 10-yard pass from Angel Guardado.

Tri-City evened the score on a 19-yard pass from Zach Reitmeyer to Matt Clark. And on the final play of the half, Madden took a short pass from Reitmeyer and scampered nine yards to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead at the break.

Lee would find paydirt again, finishing off the Cougars’ first drive of the third quarter with a five-yard plunge to tie it at 14.

But that’s when Madden took over. On the first play of the ensuing drive, he spun away from a would-be tackler around the line of scrimmage and then outran everyone for a 74-yard touchdown. The next time Tri-City got the ball, he took the handoff on their first snap and sprinted 75 yards for another touchdown. And on the Eagles’ next possession after that, he waited until the second play of the drive to rip off yet another 75-yard touchdown run.

Four plays for the Eagles. Three carries for Madden — which he turned into 224 yards and a trio of touchdowns.

"It’s just what I do," said Madden. "It’s a job. I have to do my job, you know."

"I felt like a little bit of weight was lifted off our shoulders on defense," said linebacker Eric Wojnowski, about Madden’s exploits. "It definitely motivated everyone on the team — sideline, stands, everyone."

All together, Madden collected 302 yards from scrimmage on the night, complemented by his four total trips to the end zone.

The scoreboard all of a sudden said that Tri-City had a 34-14 lead, and that would end up being the final tally. The Eagles move on to the second round of the Division 5 bracket, where they will host #7 Calexico.

PREVIEW: The PPR’s Small School Game of the Week opens the playoff schedule with a Division 5 matchup between the #6 San Ysidro Cougars (5-5) and the #3 Tri-City Christian Eagles (8-2).

The Red Jacket brigade will be live on the scene for all of the evening’s festivities, with pregame coverage during the PrePR and full highlights after the game.

San Ysidro comes into this game having just clinched their first league title in school history, as their win over Southwest in the regular season finale made them the outright Metro-Pacific champs.

Leading the way for the Cougars has been running back Daishawn Lee, with a trio of touchdowns in each of their league games. The Eagles will need to be on their toes from the opening kick, as Lee scored a 62-yard touchdown on the fifth play against Southwest and a 65-yard score on the very first snap against Castle Park.

Tri-City skews toward the ground game as well. Junior quarterback Zach Reitmeyer has thrown for 1670 yards and 17 TDs, but has also run 89 times for 676 yards and a dozen scores. He’s flanked by senior Anthony Madden, who has turned 132 carries into 1090 yards and 19 TDs. As a team, the Eagles average a robust 7.5 yards per carry.

Eric Wojnowski spearheads the Tri-City defense, leading the team with 58 tackles and 5 sacks. Jace Mertes patrols the secondary, with a team-high 5 interceptions.
