Tri-City Medical North County Game of the Week: La Costa Canyon Mavericks 36, Carlsbad Lancers 21
La Costa Canyon Running Back Karson Lippert is the reigning 400M San Diego Section Champion, he is also quite amazing with a football in his arms, as the Junior helped lead LCC (5-0) to a 36-21 win over Carlsbad (3-2) in the Tri-City Medical North County Game of the Week.
Lippert had more than 350 yards from scrimmage while scoring three touchdowns, with each measuring 80+ yards.
Carlsbad’s 1st drive of the game was fumbled away, after a three yard loss, Lippert turned the turnover into an 83 yard touchdown run. LCC would add a field goal, and then Lippert went to work again, breaking off a 95 yard TD run in the second for a 17-0 lead.
2nd half, Thadd MacNeal’s crew lead a furious charge after two Troy Bloomquist touchdown passes and a two point conversion, the Mavericks lead was three, and Lippert strikes again, busting off an 80 yard run and the 24th Kiwanis cup was all but wrapped up. LCC even the series at 12-12 and held on to the Rotary Cup for the 3rd straight season.
Both teams will have a bye in week six, before resuming Avocado League play on October 6th.
The Carlsbad Rotary cup will be up for grabs in the Tri-City Medical North County Game of the Week.
These neighborhood schools will match up for the 22nd straight season. The Mavericks have won 8 of the last ten match ups including a 21-0 win in 2016.
La Costa Canyon (4-0) comes into the game with a perfect record as they open Avocado League play while Carlsbad (3-1) dropped their league opener to the top team in San Diego County in Mission Hills last week 35-7.
This one will come down to quarterback play, La Costa Canyon senior Jake Neufeld who has Ivy League offers from Colombia and Yale is a dual threat quarterback and leads an offense that is putting up 39 points a game.
LCC may have their best set of skill players since the school was opened, RB Carson Lippert averages 9+ yards per carry, and has 7 rushing TD’s in 37 carries. He is also the San Diego Section record holder in the 400 meters. While their other RB Jaquan Carroll averages a touchdown a game.
Carlsbad counters with an offense lead by Quarterback Troy Bloomquist who was put into the starting role when the #1 QB transferred to Timpview H.S. in Utah. The senior signal caller has responded with 10 TD passes against just one interception.
The Lancers have the "Next Man Up" mentality this season losing linemen as well as running backs, but their guys have responded like senior RB Joel Lazaro who started the season as their 3rd string guy. His highlights this year include a 169 yard effort in a 22-14 upset win at St. Augustine.
