Trial ordered for 82-year-old man accused of shooting wife over divorce papers

EL CAJON (CNS) – An 82-year-old La Mesa man accused of shooting his wife
of 54 years after she served him with divorce papers must stand trial on
attempted murder and assault charges, a judge ruled today.

Clyde Jay Hayen, who is in custody in lieu of $500,000 bail, allegedly
opened fire inside the couple's home in the 7300 block of Princeton Avenue
about 11:15 p.m. on June 20.

Paramedics took the 73-year-old victim to a hospital for treatment of
gunshot wounds to her abdomen and one of her hands, La Mesa police Lt. Matt
Nicholass said.

El Cajon Judge Evan Kirvin, who presided over the defendant's
preliminary hearing, ruled that enough evidence was presented for Hayen to
stand trial Sept. 30. A readiness conference was set for Sept. 10.

The defendant faces 24 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy
District Attorney Amy Bamberg Colby.
