Two East County schools locked down

LAKESIDE (CNS) – A vandalism suspect holed up in a home Monday when
deputies tried to detain him in an East County neighborhood prompted a
standoff and lockdowns at two nearby schools.

Sheriff's patrol personnel went to the 12700 block of Lakeshore Drive in
Lakeside shortly after 9:30 a.m. on reports that a man was slashing tires of
parked cars in the area, Lt. Anthony Ray said.

When they spotted the suspect and tried to detain him for questioning,
he ran into a nearby house and refused repeated orders to come out and
surrender. About 10:30 a.m., a sheriff's SWAT team called in to take up
positions around the residence, Ray said.

The suspect was believed to be armed with a knife and possibly a gun.

Two nearby campuses a short distance away — Lindo Park Elementary
School and El Capitan High — were put on lockdown as a precaution, the
lieutenant said.
