Two high school students save a boy’s life
Two local high school students were honored Monday for their efforts in saving a young man's life at a swim meet.
Anne Driscoll and Maddie Uebelhor, both 15 years old, were warming up for the swim meet when Driscoll noticed a male swimmer hunched over at the bottom of the pool.
She swam down to the boy and began pulling him to the surface with Uebelhor's help.
“I took a breath and swam down, I kind of tapped his shoulder a little bit to see if he was responsive but he wasn't, so I kind of just grabbed him and swam to the surface,” said Driscoll.
“I think it's pretty cool that I did save a life. And it's nice to know that he is okay afterwards,” Uebelhor said.
The boy, 15-year old Jackson Hawkins, was treated at a hospital and released. He presented the girls with flowers on Monday at a ceremony at the Boys and Girls Club in Solana Beach.
