Two killed in fiery, head-on collision on SR-52

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A pickup truck traveling the wrong way on state Route 52 in Clairemont collided with an oncoming car early today, killing both drivers.

The gray 2006 Ford Ranger was heading east on the westbound side of the freeway shortly after 12:30 a.m. when it crashed into a 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS 550 near Regents Road and caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both motorists — La Jolla residents ages 33 and 52, respectively — died at the scene. The men’s names were withheld pending family notification. Each was the sole occupant of his vehicle, the CHP reported.

The accident left both westbound lanes of the freeway in the area blocked for about 90 minutes.
