Two plead guilty in shooting death of a woman

EL CAJON (CNS) – Two men pleaded guilty Wednesday to involvement in the shooting death of a woman whose body was set ablaze on a dirt road near Loveland Reservoir south of Alpine.

Jessi Lydell Mendoza, 30, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and gun allegations in the death last March of 35-year-old Kimberly Hayes of Lakeside. Mendoza is expected to be sentenced to 50 years to life in prison on April 15.

Matthew Leroy Williams, 31, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and gun-use allegations and agreed to a 21-year prison sentence. Formal sentencing is scheduled March 16.

Evidence indicated Hayes was shot to death in an El Cajon apartment last March 8. Her body was discovered the next day on Sequan Truck Trail.

Two women, Lauren Rae Huett and Jennifer Stein, pleaded guilty at earlier hearings to being an accessory to a crime.

Authorities said the motive for the killing apparently stemmed from attempts by Hayes to gain custody of Stein’s and Mendoza’s newborn child.
