Two suspects arrested in gang-related shooting that injured little girl

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – San Diego police have arrested two men for Saturday's gang-related shooting in the Emerald Hills neighborhood.

Police arrested 18-year-old Anthony Penn and a 16-year-old juvenile for the shooting that left 21-year-old Martin Barnett and 7-year-old Laura Castello wounded, Lt Bill Stetson said. Castello was an innocent bystander, playing in a nearby yard.

The shooting occurred at roughly 1:50 p.m. on Roswell Street near 56th Street, police said.

Witnesses told police Barnett stood across the street from the two suspects. Words were exchanged and the 16-year-old suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds at Barnett. Two rounds struck Barnett in his upper arms. One round struck 7-year-old Laura Castello in the leg. Barnett and Castello were transported by paramedics for treatment and both are expected to be OK.

The two suspects fled in a dark-brown 4-door Ford, according to police. Gang Unit detectives identified Penn as the companion of the shooter during the incident when he returned to the scene after the shooting. The 16-year-old was taken into custody at his home without incident at about 7:10 p.m. last night, Stetson said.

Both suspects are being charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and participation in a criminal street gang, Stetson said.
