U.S. Coast Guard awards WWI sailor with a Purple Heart
SAN DIEGO (KUSI)- The U.S. Coast Guard presented the Purple Heart to the family of fireman William James Williams, who was killed in action 100 years ago today when the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa sank.
Williams joined the Coast Guard in 1918 after reading a newspaper article calling for those willing to serve.
Six months later, the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa was struck by an enemy torpedo. Williams, along with all 130 people aboard, lost his life.
