UCSD Professor Tom Wong running for 53rd Congressional District

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Tom Wong, a professor at the University of California San Diego, announced his candidacy today for California’s 53rd congressional district. If elected, he will become the first formerly undocumented AAPI elected official in Congress.

Wong came to the U.S. from Hong Kong when he was 2 years old and learned he was undocumented when he was 16. When he was 19 years old, he changed his immigration status and went on to serve in the Obama Administration.

Over the past three years, Wong has been a part of 12 federal lawsuits against the Trump Administration and won. He has been on the front lines of defending DACA, ending family separation, prohibiting indefinite child detention and public charge.

Wong’s policy agenda includes immigration reform, fighting climate change, medicare for all, strengthening public education, stricter gun laws and criminal justice reform.

The race also includes City Council President Georgette Gomez and former Congressional Candidate Sara Jacobs.
