Unconfirmed mountain lion sighting near Poway school

POWAY (CNS) – An unconfirmed reported sighting of a mountain lion near a
North County neighborhood Tuesday prompted a search of the area and some extra
security precautions at a nearby primary school.

A resident made an emergency call to report seeing what appeared to be a
cougar near Chaparral Elementary in Poway about 10:45 a.m., according to
sheriff's officials.

Administrators at the Tannin Drive campus kept all pupils indoors while
deputies and state Fish and Game officers checkout out the area, finding no
sign of a mountain lion.

In a letter sent home to parents, school Principal Dawn Zwibel said her
staffers had taken additional safety measures, including extra supervision as
classes let out for the day, “in an abundance of caution.”
