University City Centurions 44, Hoover Cardinals 0

Although both the University City Centurions and Hoover High Cardinals were looking for a win in their second week of conference play, only the Centurions were able to make that goal a reality. Unfortunately for Hoover, they lost their seventh game of the season, but the crowd was still excited to celebrate their homecoming game. The Centurions, however, have improved  their record now to 4-3, and have won their last two games in a row.

Although the game began with a few successive passes  by Hoover, a University City interception by Reid Speicher opened up a chance offensively for the Centurions. Kees Van Daelen took advantage of the offensive opportunity by running the ball two yards and creating a 6-0 score. Later in the first quarter Jayden Wickware ran the ball for a one yard touchdown run and the first quarter ended in a score of 14-0.

To start the second quarter, Kees Van Daelen had a quick twelve yard touchdown run, his second touchdown of the night, and helped extend the gap between the Centurions and the Cardinals. After Hoover’s punt attempt failed and ended up in the Cardinal end zone for a safety, the Centurions were then able to score on the next play’s ensuing kick as Reid Speicher returned the ball 66 yards. The score to end the second quarter was 30-0.

The second half of the game included two more touchdowns by the Centurions, the last of which was a twenty yard pass from Kees Van Daelen to Casey Granfors, and put the Centurions out of reach of the Cardinals.

The final score of the game was 44-0 in favor of the Centurions, and both teams are moving into the ninth week of playing in hopes of finding a win in conference play.

It’s officially the eighth week of the 2016 high school football season, and this week the University City Centurions will be matching up against the Hoover Cardinals. The Centurions come into this game with an even record (3-3) while the Hoover Cardinals have yet to record a win in their 0-6 season so far.

University City has found success this year against teams like Sweetwater, Mission Bay, and Serra, and will be traveling to Hoover High School to take on the Cardinals. The Centurions are led by their quarterback Kees Van Daelen who has 1,491 passing yards and 15 touch down passes so far this season. Both Casey Granfors and Gavin Rasmussen have scored 42 touch down points in the first seven weeks of play, and lead the Centurions in scoring. Jake Jones and his 77 total tackles on the season have helped the Centurion defense in some of their three key wins. The Centurions are coming off of a strong win against Serra where they scored 49 points and allowed only 27.

On the other side of the field, the Cardinals are still working on both their offensive and defensive game in the 2016 season. Having yet to win a game at either their home or away locations, the Cardinals and their new Head Coach, Jimmy Morgans, are hoping to find their first victory Friday night. While the offense hasn’t scored this season, the team is still battling every game.

The game at Hoover High School will take place at 6:30. Follow the @redjacketarmy on twitter to stay updated on the score.
